The fragments and objects we inherit as souvenirs of journeys undertaken are a lens which allow us a view into the past. With these works Frith traces her own Banks Peninsula settler history. From arrival in Akaroa on board the Angelina and Lyttelton on board the Duke of Bronte, Frith discovers the memories, myths and stories that travel through time and weaves these fragments into patterns which present the notion of the past, present and future existing simultaneously. Exploring the experiences of the settler women, these paintings like small embroideries, are rich with a sense of discovery of the Great Southern Land. Of the hardships and hopes, of journeys away from their own history, to the new land to build an unknown future.
